Gas BBQ Safety

Gas barbecues can be dangerous if they are not maintained properly. LPG Gas is highly flammable and easily ignited. Follow these simple checks to ensure you maintain your barbecue and use it safely.

If your BBQ is new, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully as you build and use your BBQ for the first time. Check that your gas connections are tight.
Inspect the hose and connections regularly for signs of perishing or cracking. If the hose is perished or cracked, do not use the BBQ until the hose has been replaced.
If you have a POL type fitting, check the O ring on the gas connection, as these often perish and cause leakage. O rings are readily available and inexpensive to replace.
Use a soapy water solution to check for leaks on the cylinder connection. Use any household detergent, squirt the suds onto the connection between the hose and the cylinder. Bubbles will form if gas is escaping. If no bubbles appear, it is safe to cook. Use this leak test every time you connect or change gas cylinders.
Check your gas cylinders for damage. Never use damaged cylinders or cylinders that are past their test date, i.e. more than 10 years old. Always use a reputable dealer when exchanging or refilling gas cylinders.
Keep your BBQ clean and in good condition, free from grease build up.
Store and transport gas cylinders safely. Always close cylinder valves when not in use, and ensure that cylinders are securely restrained, kept upright and well ventilated when transporting.
